Countdown to Kickoff: 49 Days

As we continue on our daily countdown towards the 2007 season, we are now at 49. Rockin' the #49 jersey is BIG SED, Sedrick Ellis. The 6'1" 305 lbs senior nose tackle is entering his third season as a starter and we are expecting BIG things from him this season. Ellis is on the Watch Lists for the 2007 Outland Trophy, Lombardi Award, Bednarik Award and Lott Trophy.

Ellis will look to improve on his numbers from last season were he accumulated 34 tackles, 8 tackles for loss, and 4 pass deflections. The Trojans will enter the 2007 season with a lot of experience on the defensive line. Ellis will start alongside fellow senior Lawrence Jackson, and juniors Kyle Moore and Fili Moala. Incoming freshman Everson Griffen will add a tremendous amount of talent to an already impressive defensive unit whose only visible weakness (on paper) is a lack of depth.

With this talent group up front I don't picture Ellis getting doubled, at least not early on in the season. As a result, look for last seasons Morris Trophy winner to spend a lot of time in the backfield ballin', brushin' his shoulders, or helping opposing quarterbacks out of the ground.

FIGHT ON!

I don't see depth being much of a problem. I believe we have 3 solid defensive ends in Jackson, Moore, and Griffen and there shouldn't be any drop in production when one of them comes out of the game. At tackle, the loss of Chris Barrett definitely hurts because of his experience, but Averell Spicer and Alex Parsons will be given a chance to backup Ellis and Moala. Don't forget Carroll can use multiple defensive alignments to, like the 3-4, so there's no need to be alarmed. I don't think Idaho thinks we lack depth anywhere!

Fight On!
