2007 NFL Draft: Winners and Losers
WINNERS
These are the teams who I think helped themselves the most, along with their notable additions (arranged chronologically by their 1st pick)...
Oakland Raiders -- QB JaMarcus Russell (1st Rd /#1 overall), TE Zach Miller (2nd Rd /#38 overall), DE Quinton Moses (3rd Rd /#65), OT Mario Henderson (3rd Rd /#91 overall), WR Johnnie Lee Higgins (3rd Rd /#99 overall), RB Michael Bush (4th Rd /#100 overall), QB Josh McCown and WR Mike Williams (Trade with Detroit Lions for a 4th Rd pick /#105 overall)
Cleveland Browns -- OT Joe Thomas (1st Rd /#3 overall), QB Brady Quinn (1st Rd /#22 overall), CB Eric Wright (2nd Rd /#53 overall)
Atlanta Falcons -- DE Jamaal Anderson (1st Rd /#8 overall), OG Justin Blalock (2nd Rd /#39 overall), CB Chris Houston (2nd Rd /#41 overall)
San Francisco 49ers -- LB Patrick Willis (1st Rd /#11 overall), OT Joe Staley (1st Rd /#28 overall), WR Jason Hill (3rd Rd /#76 overall), DE Ray McDonald (3rd /#97 overall), DE Jay Moore (4th Rd /#104 overall)
LOSERS
Now for the teams that had a sub-par weekend (also in order of their 1st pick)...
Tampa Bay -- Not because of who they drafted, DE Gaines Adams (1st Rd /#4 overall) and OG Arron Sears (2nd Rd /#35 overall) are solid picks, but they failed because of who they didn't get. The Bucs should have been more aggresive in its trade talks with Detroit for WR Calvin Johnson.
Washington -- Safety LaRon Landry (1st Rd /#6 overall) will be a phenomenal player, but the Redskins needed a dynamic pass rusher and probably should have traded down, since they didn't have a pick in rounds 2, 3, and 4.
Green Bay -- The Packers must believe that Brett Favre can still carry this team because they gave him absolutely no help in this draft. DT Justin Harrell (1st Rd /#16 overall) should help shore up the run defense, but TE Greg Olsen would have been a great value at 16. The hole at RB was filled by 2nd round pick Brandon Jackson (#63 overall), who doesn't have the big play capability of Adrian Peterson or Marshawn Lynch. The Packers also failed to trade for Oakland WR Randy Moss, a move that would have really rejuvenated Favre.
Tennessee -- The Titans chose S Michael Griffin (1st Rd /#19 overall) even though several quality players at positions of need were still on the board. Remember, the loss of Pacman Jones resulted in a need at both CB and KR/PR. They also failed to land a quality WR for Vince Young (3rd round WR Paul Williams and 6th round WR Joel Filani instead of Bowe or Meachem), an elusive RB to complement LenDale White (2nd round pick Chris Henry was a terrible pick), and a pass rusher (Jarvis Moss or Anthony Spencer were still on the board at #19).
NY Giants -- CB Aaron Ross (1st Rd /#20 overall) and WR Steve Smith (2nd Rd /#51 overall) are excellent picks, but they should have taken OT Joe Staley at #20, and then looked for a CB in round 2. QB Eli Manning was under constant pressure last year, and the Giants lost tackles Bob Whitfield and Luke Petigout in the off-season.
Kansas City -- The Chiefs are another team that passed on Joe Staley, they opted for WR Dwayne Bowe (1st Rd /#23 overall) instead. The drop off at tackle is significant after Staley, and they could have landed a quality WR in round 2. They did well by adding two DTs (Turk McBride and Tank Tyler), but they failed to draft a CB (Daymeion Hughes was pick #95 overall by the Colts). They also drafted a kicker from fucla who was involved in a DUI that almost killed his female passenger.
Philadelphia -- The Eagles traded out of the 1st round (#26 overall) and made QB Kevin Kolb (2nd Rd /#36 overall) their first selection of the draft. There may be some durability questions surrounding QB Donovan McNabb, but they have enough depth behind him with A.J. Feely and the recently acquired Kelly Holcomb (via trade with Buffalo). This pick doesn't provide an instant impact and may send the wrong message to McNabb. There were plenty of quality players available at the 26th overall pick, so the decision to trade down on a developmental QB is very questionable. Read More......
WTF??
Weekend Recap
1) NFL DRAFT: Full write up by Mel Kiper Fan. Disappointing day for Trojans named Dwayne Jarrett. Best wished to Steve Smith, Lua, Kalil, and Sartz.
2) NBA Playoffs: The Mavs are on the ropes (God help them) and the Bulls finished off the Heat. Pretty exciting first round so far. I am pretty sure the Suns and Spurs, even though they won't admit, are hoping for Dallas to lose because they want none of that 68-win team that has yet to show up.
3) 360: RG3 and I got plenty of Halo and Fifa in this weekend since there are no more classes. Also, since my buddy flaked out on Coachella, I was forced to drive around on the 91 listening to Rage Against The Machine while balling my eyes out.
4) Entourage: Vince needs to get rid of his psycho-bitch agent. Seriously. I liked Chuck Liddell gettting in Drama's face and the fact that Pauly Shore is still a loser. Ari also looks like he is back to himself. Good episode and will get VERY interesting.
April 30th sounds like a shitty day, but in reality, its not.
April 30th, 1945: Adolph Hitler and Eva Braun commit suicide after one day of marriage.
April 30th, 1966: The Church of Satan is born
April 30th, 1993: The World Wide Web is born.
Have a good day. Read More......
Two Trojans sign as undrafted free agents
OT Kyle Williams has signed with the Baltimore Ravens as an undrafted free agent. Williams should get a chance to compete in Baltimore because they need some depth at tackle. RT Tony Pashos was lost to free agency and LT Jonathan Ogden will probably retire at the end of the 2007 season.
Seven Trojans have now been claimed by NFL teams, after 5 were selected in last weekend's draft. The LA Times reports that FB Ryan Powdrell plans to sign with the Packers, which would then make the list 8. This was a successful draft for the Trojans when you consider the players who left USC for the NFL early last year. Last year's early entrants included RBs Reggie Bush and LenDale White, OT Winston Justice, and OG Fred Matua. Read More......
Recap of Trojans in the NFL Draft
WR Dwayne Jarrett -- Carolina Panthers, 2nd Rd / Pick #13 (#45 overall)
Of the 5 Trojans drafted, WR Dwayne Jarrett had to have been the most disappointed. Many considered him a 1st Round lock after his impressive performance in the Rose Bowl win over Michigan, where he dominated the All-American cornerback Leon Hall (who was drafted 18th overall). However, a slow 40 time and a perceived laziness raised question marks about Jarrett's work ethic. His stock plummeted from being the 2nd best WR (after Calvin Johnson) to a borderline 1st Round pick. Jarrett waited through the entire 1st Round and watched 7 WRs get drafted ahead of him, until finally hearing his name called as the 13th selection of the 2nd Round. This is a good fit for DJ though. He will learn the ropes from former Trojan greats Keyshawn Johnson and Keary Colbert, and should eventually succeed Keyshawn at WR.
WR Steve Smith -- New York Giants, 2nd Rd / Pick #19 (#51 overall)
Smith goes into a good situation with the Giants. He can compete for the #3 or possibly the #2 WR position (behind Plaxico Burress) and eventually replace the aging Amani Toomer.
C Ryan Kalil -- Carolina Panthers, 2nd Rd / Pick #27 (#59 overall)
Kalil will join DJ, as well as former teammate Keary Colbert in Carolina. Kalil has first round talent and can be considered a steal for the Panthers at pick #59 overall. Kalil should compete for a starting job, and will be at worst, a valuable back up next season.
LB Dallas Sartz -- Washington Redskins, 5th Rd / Pick #6 (#143 overall)
Sartz has a chance to make the team if he can contribute on special teams. He's a smart player, and was a captain on a great Trojan defense.
LB Oscar Lua -- New England Patriots, 7th Rd / Pick #1 (#211 overall)
Lua is a great fit for the Patriots, who employ 2 inside LBs in their 3-4 scheme. He has a chance to learn from two of the smartest, most instinctive LBs in the game, Tedy Bruschi and Mike Vrabel, and then eventually replace one of them.
** On a personal side note: Kicker Justin Medlock (5th Rd) was the only fucla player chosen in the entire draft. That's pathetic!

USC hopefuls in the 2007 NFL Draft
In my final mock draft projection, I listed Dwayne Jarrett as the only Trojan selected in the 1st Round, but keep in mind that Ryan Kalil and Steve Smith are two of the fastest rising prospects in this draft. I wouldn't be shocked at all to hear their all of their names in Round 1. Below is a breakdown of where I think each one may go...
WR Dwayne Jarrett - Projection: #23 Kansas City Chiefs
There are plenty of teams that need a WR. In order of their selections, they are: #7 Minnesota, #11 San Francisco, #13 St. Louis, #16 Green Bay, #19 Tennessee, #20 NY Giants, #21 Denver, #23 Kansas City, #25 NY Jets, #26 Philadelphia, #30 San Diego, and #31 Chicago. Though all of these teams are in dire need of a WR, I think the earliest that Jarrett will go is #16 to the Packers. Jarrett is just too talented, and there are too many potential suitors for me to believe that he will fall out of the 1st Round.
C Ryan Kalil - Projection: 2nd Round, #33 Oakland Raiders
I believe that Ryan Kalil will be the best pro in this Trojan draft class, and maybe even the best lineman overall. Kalil has 1st Round talent and value, but the problem is that the teams that really like him (which is probably all 32) have so many more pressing needs than center. The teams to keep on eye on though are: #20 NY Giants, #21 Denver, #22 Dallas, #24 and #28 New England, # 27 New Orleans, #29 Baltimore, #33 (2nd Rd) Oakland, #34 Detroit, #40 Miami, #42 San Francisco, #46 Pittsburgh, and #52 St. Louis. Kalil is the kind of player teams trade up for so it'll be interesting to see where he goes. I'd give him 50% chance to go 1st Round.
WR Steve Smith - Projection: 2nd Round, #41 Minnesota Vikings
Steve is a hot commodity these days. I believe he has a 33% chance to go in the 1st Round, but the problem is that this is such a deep draft when it comes to WR's. Steve Smith displays leadership, toughness, quickness and great route running. He is the definition of a FOOTBALL PLAYER. However, unless there is an early run on WR's, Smith is likely to fall to the 2nd Round. Possible destinations for Smith include: #20 NY Giants, #21 Denver, #22 Dallas, #23 Kansas City, #25 NY Jets, #26 Philadelphia, #27 New Orleans, #30 San Diego, #31 and #37 Chicago, #36 Tampa Bay, and # 40 Miami. I guarantee that Smith will not drop below Tennessee at #50, where he'd be re-united with his old OC Norm Chow.
The Raiders are now on the clock...good luck to all our guys.

2007 NFL Mock Draft: Final Version
Enter new NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell: "With the first pick in the 2007 NFL Draft, the Oakland Raiders select..."
ROUND 1
1.
OAKLAND QB JaMarcus Russell, LSUThe Raiders have two options: Russell or Johnson. However, with Andrew Walter as the current starter, QB is a more pressing need.
2.
DETROIT WR Calvin Johnson, Georgia TechThe Lions will get some offers for Johnson, and are likely to trade down to #4, sending Johnson to Tampa Bay, but only if the price is right.
3.
CLEVELAND QB Brady Quinn, Notre DameThe Browns have a similar dilemma to the Raiders. QB is a position of need, but is RB Adrian Peterson too good to pass up?
4.
TAMPA BAY DE Gaines Adams, ClemsonThe Bucs may not be able to sit at #4 and wait for Johnson, so they will likely make a deal with Detroit, leaving Adams for the Lions.
5.
ARIZONA OT Joe Thomas, WisconsinThe Cardinals will take Thomas is he's still on the board. If he's gone, then look for them to trade down for Penn State's Levi Brown.
6.
WASHINGTON DT Amobi Okoye, LouisvilleThe Redskins don't pick again until round 4, so look for the Redskins to trade down if the guy they are targeting is off the board.
7.
MINNESOTA FS LaRon Landry, LSUThe Vikings are in position to select the best available player. LaRon Landry will provide an immediate impact on their defense.
8.
ATLANTA (from HOU) OT Levi Brown, Penn StateThe Falcons need a safety, but with Landry gone and Reggie Nelson being a slight reach, they decide to upgrade the o-line.
9.
MIAMI DE Adam Carriker, NebraskaThe Dolphins can go in any direction with this pick. Carriker has great value because he can play in a 3-4 or 4-3 defense.
10.
HOUSTON (from ATL) FS Reggie Nelson, FloridaThe Texans also need a LT and may consider trading down if Brown is off the board. Nelson would provide a major upgrade at FS.
11.
SAN FRANCISCO LB Patrick Willis, Ole MissThe 49ers saw Willis up close and personal at the Senior Bowl practices, but teams may trade up to take him earlier.
12.
BUFFALO RB Adrian Peterson, OklahomaThe Bills need help at MLB, CB, and RB. They will be jumping for joy if Peterson falls this far.
13.
ST. LOUIS DE Jamaal Anderson, ArkansasThe Rams took CB Tye Hill last year, and must continue to build the defense. They will take the best available defensive lineman.
14.
CAROLINA TE Greg Olsen, Miami (FL)The Panthers took RB DeAngelo Williams last year, and will add another offensive weapon, a TE that can stretch the field.
15.
PITTSBURGH LB Lawrence Timmons, Florida StateThe Steelers are transitioning from the 3-4 defense to a Tampa 2 scheme. Timmons has the ability play outside in either scheme.
16.
GREEN BAY RB Marshawn Lynch, CaliforniaThe Packers need a RB, first and foremost. They can address their needs for a big, physical WR and a playmaking TE in later rounds.
17.
JACKSONVILLE CB Darrelle Revis, PittsburghThe Jaguars would love to see Reggie Nelson still on the board, but with him gone they go after the best value at DE or CB.
18.
CINCINNATI DT Alan Branch, MichiganThe Bengals drafted a CB in the 1st Rd last year, and should now look to patch up the run defense, which has been terrible.
19.
TENNESSEE WR Ted Ginn Jr., Ohio StateThe Titans need to replace Pacman Jones not only at CB, but in the return game as well. Ted Ginn Jr. more than satisfies the latter.
20.
NY GIANTS OT Joe Staley, Central MichiganThe Giants are very thin at CB, and will be tempted to take Leon Hall, but the left tackle class is a lot less deep than the CB class.
21.
DENVER DE Anthony Spencer, PurdueThe Broncos need an explosive pass rusher to fully compliment their outstanding tandem at CB (Champ Bailey and Dre Bly).
22.
DALLAS CB Leon Hall, MichiganThe Cowboys must continue to upgrade the secondary, but it'll hard to pass up LSU's Dwayne Bowe or USC's Dwayne Jarrett.
23.
KANSAS CITY WR Dwayne Jarrett, USCThe Chiefs liked Tamba Hali last year and drafted him higher than most people expected. I see a similar situation with Jarrett.
24.
NEW ENGLAND S Michael Griffin, TexasThe Patriots have to be concerned with the recent injuries that have plagued SS Rodney Harrison.
25.
NY JETS CB Chris Houston, ArkansasThe Jets need a pass-rushing OLB, but with Spencer gone, they draft the best available CB.
26.
PHILADELPHIA S Brandon Meriweather, Miami (FL)The Eagles need a DB after releasing SS Michael Lewis. FS Brian Dawkins can mentor his eventual replacement.
27.
NEW ORLEANS CB Aaron Ross, TexasThe Saints defense overachieved last season, but they were extremely vulnerable at CB, and still are.
28.
NEW ENGLAND LB Paul Posluszny, Penn StateThe Patriots are the only team with two first round picks, and will likely use them to add depth to their aging defense.
29.
BALTIMORE OG Ben Grubbs, AuburnThe Ravens need lots of help up front, especially at tackle, but the best value at pick 29 will be to take Grubbs.
30.
SAN DIEGO WR Robert Meachem, TennesseeThe Chargers need a guy that can stretch the field and open things up for Tomlinson and TE Antonio Gates.
31.
CHICAGO WR Dwayne Bowe, LSUThe Bears are still negotiating trades for disgruntled LB Lance Briggs, but it doesn't look like they can make a deal before this weekend.
32.
INDIANAPOLIS LB Jon Beason, Miami (FL)The Colts replaced Edgerrin James through the draft last season by selecting Joseph Addai. Now they'll look to replace LB Cato June.
ROUND 2
33. OAKLAND C Ryan Kalil, USC
34. DETROIT LB David Harris, Michigan
35. CLEVELAND CB Marcus McCauley, Fresno State
36. TAMPA BAY DT Justin Harrell, Tennessee
37. CHICAGO (from NYJ via WAS) OT Tony Ugoh, Arkansas
38. ARIZONA DE Jarvis Moss, Florida
39. ATLANTA (from HOU) DE Charles Johnson, Georgia
40. MIAMI OL Arron Sears, Tennessee
41. MINNESOTA WR Steve Smith, USC
42. SAN FRANCISCO WR Anthony Gonzalez, Ohio State
43. BUFFALO CB Eric Wright, UNLV
44. ATLANTA DT DeMarcus "Tank" Tyler, NC State
45. CAROLINA LB Buster Davis, Florida State
46. PITTSBURGH OG Justin Blaylock, Texas
47. GREEN BAY TE Zach Miller, Arizona State
48. JACKSONVILLE DE Ray McDonald, Florida
49. CINCINNATI CB Josh Wilson, Maryland

54. KANSAS CITY CB Jonathan Wade, Tennessee

58. NEW ORLEANS LB Justin Durant, Hampton
59. NY JETS TE Ben Patrick, Delaware
60. MIAMI (from NE) QB Drew Stanton, Michigan State
61. BALTIMORE DE LaMarr Woodley, Michigan
62. SAN DIEGO S Eric Weddle, Utah

UCLA goes for 100*

Fucla currently holds the record for the most NCAA national championships with 99*. This weekend fucla's women's gymnastics team will be playing for fucla's 100*th national championship. Women's gymnastics? Fucla could hit the century mark with a national championship in women's gymnastics? Now I'm not hating on women's gymnastics. Its actually one of my favorite events to watch during the Olympics. However this did make me curious as to how fucla managed to win 99* national championships.
Here is the breakdown of fucla's 99* national championships.
men's basketball: 11What I discovered is that 19 of fucla's 99* national championships are in sports that USC doesn't have. The only thing, historically and currently, that makes fucla relevant is its rivalry with USC. Which makes me question the validity of any championships fucla wins in which they do not have to compete with the Trojans. Subtracting those 19 national championships gives fucla a total of 80. This puts fucla at #3 all-time right behind USC with 84. From now on USC Sports Talk will always refer to fucla's 99* national championships with the presence of an asterisk.
men's golf: 1
women's golf: 2
men's gymnastics: 2
women's gymnastics: 5
men's soccer: 4
women's softball: 10
men's swimming & diving: 1
men's tennis: 16
women's indoor track & field: 2
men's outdoor track & field: 8
women's outdoor track & field: 3
men's volleyball: 19
women's volleyball: 3
men's water polo: 8
women's water polo: 4
FUCK THE BRUINS!
FYI USC holds the record for the most men's national championships with 73 (soon to be 74). Fucla follows USC (as they always should) with 70* (actual number = 64).

I am sure, scratch that, fuckin positive, that we will have a write up on the NFL Draft as early as Saturday night. Check back for Mel Kiper Jr's report.
Finally, there has been some discussion lately about where Jarrett falls in the draft and how his comparison to Mike Williams is killing his draft status. Recruiting Update: Greg Monroe

Greg Monroe, the #1 rated high school junior, is still very undecided as to where he will be playing his college ball. According to an interesting article from nola.com Monroe states that there are 10 school that are intensely recruiting him. The list includes Kentucky, Kansas, Southern Cal, LSU, Duke, North Carolina, Louisville, Connecticut, Texas and Florida. Monroe's coach seems to believe that Greg has a few favorites picked, but Monroe refuses to give them up.
Monroe has four main criterion that he will use to guide him through the recruiting process.
-- Monroe favors joining a team that has an established program;
-- He is seeking a coach that can help him improve, in order to advance to the NBA;
-- A good academic program is important because Monroe plans to major in psychology;
-- Distance will not factor into his decision.
Tourney Tim has positioned himself nicely amongst the nations top college basketball coaches, in the battle for Monroe's signature. Lets hope that Floyd continues his hot streak in Louisiana. Read More......
RB Michael Coleman to transfer
He leaves USC, even after adamantly stating his desire to stay and play for the Trojans throughout his short career. While battling injuries this spring, Coleman openly said, "I just want to be healthy and contribute, those are my goals right now."
Coleman first injured his hip during the 2005 spring drills, shortly after enrolling in January. He tried to return in the fall, but re-injured the hip twice more during the season. Coleman ended the 2005 season having played in only four games, gaining 95 yards on 20 carries in those contests, and then had off-season surgery. He then sat out the 2006 season after feeling discomfort in his hip, possibly from returning too soon from his surgery.
The highlight of Coleman's career may have came in 2005, just weeks after he arrived on campus. There was an incident with former Trojans RB LenDale White, in which Coleman was confronted by White in the USC locker room. White, USC's all-time leader in TD's, was reacting to comments said by Coleman earlier in the week and needed to be restrained by teammates. Coleman was quoted, "(White's) good, but he's not better than me. He's not as fast as I am, and I catch the ball better." I think we all know who won that argument. Anyway, good luck to Michael "the next Whitney Lewis" Coleman at Northern Iowa or wherever the heck he transfers.

Murder suspect on the loose
Alias: The Brazilian BlurHe is guilty of demolishing the Lakers' "defense" and putting the Lakers one game closer to their second 1st round exit in two seasons.
Mike Williams anyone?

It looks like Mike Williams' career in Detroit is all but over. I read earlier this month that the Lions coaching staff was upset with Williams' no-show at the teams first organized team activity. This didn't surprise me considering the only noteworthy reports on Williams since he was drafted have been about him being overweight and late to team meetings. However, I was surprised to find out that Mike Williams has missed all the teams activities this entire offseason. Apparently he's been hanging out here in Southern California. A friend of mine told me he played a basketball game with Williams today in the Lyons Center. Here's an informative article from Lions Insider with some insight into Williams' future.
Receiver Mike Williams, who blew off the team's recent off-season workouts, could be traded before Saturday's draft. It has been speculated (including here) that the Lions might prefer to cut Williams rather than trade him because of the salary cap implications
The good news is my friend said Williams appeared to be in great shape. He said Williams was cut up and lost a lot of weight.
Favre to Williams... Touchdown! Green Bay!

Weekend roundup
1)R.I.P. Mirko Cro Cop
Who the hell saw that shit coming? I mean, most amatuer fans of the UFC weren't familiar with Cro Cop's ground skills since his striking skills (via Youtube) are what he's known for. Cro Cop was on his back early and was getting handled, but no one saw Gonzaga winning via KO. Arlovski/Werdum was disappointing, but i applaud my favorite UFC fighter( Pit Bull) for not fighting the other man's game. Bisping destroyed Elvis, but Bisping almost got submitted after Elvis stunned him with a knee at the beginning of the 2nd round. Good card all around, just wasn't feeling the Spike commercials. Next up: Chuck "The Iceman" Liddell versus Quinton "Rampage" Jackson May 26.
2) My valuation project sucks dick . This class makes me want to be a fuckin zoologist.
3) Jay's party: I love beer, but not when its flying through the air, which is what one drunk chode tried to do around midnight. Its too bad Jay is such a nice guy, because if it was my bash, I would have destroyed this guy, or hired someone to demolish him. I don't like blood on my button downs.
4) Entourage: The cameras haven't started rolling on Medellin yet, so Vince and E are trying to hold out. Ari is regaining his swagger and is not far from his old self. It was only a matter of time before Vince got to fuck his new agent. Very niiceee.....I like!! Read More......

2007 NFL Mock Draft: Version 2
This week's post includes my projections for the entire 1st Round. The 2 biggest risers from last week's mock are QB Brady Quinn (#7 to #2) and DE Adam Carriker (not listed to #11). Next week I'll have my final mock draft, covering rounds 1 and 2. Look for that Friday night on the eve of the draft (hopefully the Raiders will have their guy signed by then).
ROUND 1
1.
OAKLAND QB JaMarcus Russell, LSUThe Raiders are still debating whether they want Russell or stud WR Calvin Johnson. Unless they acquire a veteran QB, the pick is Russell.
2.
DETROIT QB Brady Quinn, Notre DameThe Lions should get plenty of calls from teams wanting to move up, but if they stay, then they should make Quinn their franchise QB.
3.
CLEVELAND RB Adrian Peterson, OklahomaThe Browns need a player who can help them win now. With both QB's off the board, the choice will be between Peterson and Joe Thomas.
4.
TAMPA BAY WR Calvin Johnson, Georgia TechThe Bucs may not be able to sit at #4 and wait for Johnson. They'll be holding their breath when the commissioner reads off Oakland's pick.
5.
ARIZONA OT Joe Thomas, WisconsinThe Cards will also be crossing their fingers hoping that Thomas is still on the board. If he's gone, then look for them to trade down.
6.
WASHINGTON DE Gaines Adams, ClemsonThe Redskins need to improve their pass rush, but they may still trade this pick to Chicago for LB Lance Briggs.
7.
MINNESOTA FS LaRon Landry, LSUThe Vikings are in position to select the best available player. LaRon Landry will provide an immediate impact on their defense.
8.
ATLANTA DT Amobi Okoye, LouisvilleThe Falcons covet FS LaRon Landry, but the 19 year old Okoye played for Petrino in college and has a huge upside.
9.
MIAMI OT Levi Brown, Penn StateThe Dolphins can go in any direction with this pick. They'll start by trying to piece together a stable offensive line.
10.
HOUSTON FS Reggie Nelson, FloridaThe Texans also need a LT and may consider trading down if Brown is off the board. Nelson would provide a major upgrade at FS.
11.
SAN FRANCISCO DE Adam Carriker, NebraskaThe 49ers will probably consider DT Alan Branch, but will pass because he didn't dominate in college the way a guy his size should.
12.
BUFFALO LB Patrick Willis, Ole MissThe Bills need help at MLB, CB, and RB. Willis should start immediately and become an early favorite for NFL Defensive R.O.Y.
13.
ST. LOUIS DT Alan Branch, MichiganThe Rams took CB Tye Hill last year, and must continue to build the defense.
17.
JACKSONVILLE DE Jamaal Anderson, ArkansasThe Jaguars would love to see Reggie Nelson still on the board, but with him gone they go after the best value at DE or CB.
18.
CINCINNATI CB Leon Hall, MichiganThe Bengals drafted a CB in the 1st Rd last year, but Tory James is gone and it appears Deltha O'Neal has a lost a step.
19.
TENNESSEE WR Ted Ginn Jr., Ohio StateThe Titans need to replace Pacman Jones not only at CB, but in the return game as well. Ted Ginn Jr. more than satisfies the latter.
20.
NY GIANTS LT Joe Staley, Central MichiganThe Giants are very thin at CB and LB, but they must also protect their investment (Eli Manning) better.
21.
DENVER DE Jarvis Moss, FloridaThe Broncos need an explosive pass rusher to fully compliment their outstanding tandem at CB (Champ Bailey and Dre Bly).
22.
DALLAS CB Darrelle Revis, PittsburghThe Cowboys seemed to have address their need at FS by signing Ken Hamlin, but they must continue to upgrade the secondary.
25.
NY JETS DE Anthony Spencer, PurdueThe Jets need a pass-rushing OLB to help complete their transition into to the 3-4 defense used by Coach Mangini.
26.
PHILADELPHIA CB Chris Houston, ArkansasThe Eagles added WR's Kevin Curtis and Bethel Johnson, so I think they'll draft a DB.
29.
BALTIMORE C Ryan Kalil, USCThe Ravens need lots of help along the offensive line, but who better to anchor that line than Kalil?
30.
SAN DIEGO WR Robert Meachem, TennesseeThe Chargers need a guy that can stretch the field and open things up for Tomlinson and TE Antonio Gates.
31.
CHICAGO OG Ben Grubbs, AuburnThe Bears are still negotiating trades for disgruntled LB Lance Briggs, so it's difficult to project their pick. At #31, I like Ben Grubbs.
32.
INDIANAPOLIS LB Jon Beason, Miami (FL)The Colts replaced Edgerrin James through the draft last season by selecting Joseph Addai. Now they'll look to replace LB Cato June. Read More......

Weekend prospects
1)Miami Heat vs Chicago Bulls: I have been waiting for this match-up for quite some time. Wade, his bum shoulder, and his band of misfits will have their hands full with Ben Jordan and the Baby Bulls. Yes, I spelled that right for all you self-correcting douchebags. I don't see the Heat winning this and I'll hedge with the Bulls in 6.
2)UFC 70 on Saturday Night: One of UFC's most stacked cards in a free viewing on Spike TV. Great lineup and one that cannot be missed under any circumstances. I'll take Cro Cop in the first round via TKO, standing up that is. Cro Cop's left kick will knock down a brick wall, but be wary because if this fight goes to the ground, Gonzaga has the Brazilian jiu-jitsu skills to keep this fight close. I'll take Bisping by decision and my boy Andrei Arlovksi via TKO in the first round. Arlovksi will again prove he has one of the deadliest uppercut/ straight right punches in the game.
3) Jay's hooka-party: We'll let you know how it goes. If it goes.
4) My Apple valuation case for my Analysis/Valuation class. I can't say I am looking forward to rummaging through 10-K and 10-Q financial reports, but nevertheless, I have to deal with that bullshit this weekend for an extended period of time.
5) Random shit: We all know how it goes down at the apartment. Anything and everything can happen on a whim. So we'll see. No earplugs needed.
Have a great weekend guys. Comments welcome. Read More......

One QB arrives...another goes elsewhere
The signing of Mustain raised morale amongst the Razorbacks fans, as the general feeling was that he would take the reigns of an offense which already featured the nation's most prolific tandem at RB in Darren McFadden and Felix Jones. However, Mustain was not named the starter for the season opening 50-14 loss at home versus USC. This angered the larger than normal crowd that filled the stadium waiting to see their local hero, but they did get a quick glimpse of what could have been a very promising future. Arkansas lost big to the Trojans that night, but fans (including many Trojans) will always remember when Mustain entered the game in the 4th Quarter (video below). Mustain came in and led the Razorbacks on a quick touchdown scoring drive, and showed his talent and proved worthy enough to be promoted as the starter.
Elsewhere, TrojanNYC reports that USC recruit Dayne Crist, has committed to Notre Dame. Crist (pictured below) is a 6'5" QB and a senior to be at Sherman Oaks Notre Dame (go figure). Don't know much about this kid, but he must not want to compete against Sanchez, Mustain, and Corp when he gets here.

Why I hate Floyd Mayweather Jr....

As if my disdain for the world's "so called best" pound-for-pound fighter couldn't have got any worse.....After attacking Oscar De La Hoya verbally during their U.S. media tour to promote "The World Awaits De La Hoya Mayweather Jr" on May 5th, Floyd takes yet another stab at De La Hoya and GoldenBoy promotions by calling out De La Hoya's "realness" and business skills. On top of that, Floyd doesn't hesitate to throw Sugar Shane Mosley under the bus by calling him a chump and nothing more than a "sparring partner". Jesus Christ. When the fuck is someone gonna shut this guy's mouth? Now I can understand dissing GoldenBoy promotions, but calling out 2 future Hall of Fame boxers more than warrants all the hate. But you know what? That doesn't even touch the hate I have for this guy....until I read this bullshit.
A column on Yahoo! Sports by our favorite douchebag Dan Wetzel reveals that Floyd Mayweather is tougher than we all think. He goes out on a limb to to say,
"UFC's champions can't handle boxing. That's why they are in UFC. Put one of our guys in UFC and he'd be the champion. Any good fighter, he'd straight knock them out."Not only did UFC President Dana White laugh his ass off but said "Floyd Mayweather is one of the best boxers ever, (and) Sean Sherk [UFC lightweight] will whoop his ass in under two minutes. White went on to comment on putting together a UFC contract, "And I guarantee you he would not accept it. Floyd Mayweather would never fight in the UFC because he would get his head ripped off." Now we all know how I feel about the UFC, which is passionate. But its one thing to call out "The Golden Boy" and another to call out Chuck Liddel, which Mayweather doesn't even hesitate to do. Boxing is a graceful art that requires great skill and technique, but don't kid yourself. UFC is more than street fighting. Brazilian jui-jitsu, boxing, wrestling, and Muay Thai are skills that can create the ultimate warrior. I hope De La Hoya smashes Mayweather's face, but I guess I can dream when I say that I hope Mayweather comes to the UFC. They'll need the fucking paramedics right outside the octagon to pick up whats left of this piece of shit.

SPOTLIGHT: Allen Bradford
One of the top recruits of Pete Carrol's #1 rated 2006 recruiting class, Allen Bradford, was poised to become another great USC linebacker or possibly safety. I won't even go into all the award and hype that surrounded this guy. However, with the slew of injuries that plagued USC during 2006, Bradford was needed to step up wherever Pete Carroll needed him. And that spot happened to be the fullback/tailback spot and on special teams. After scoring a touchdown in the first game against Arkansas, Bradford went on to rush for 42 yards on 13 carries (3.2 avg.) with a TD and caught 3 passes for 33 yards (11.0 avg.) with a TD. While having a slow freshman year in many opinions, Bradford appeared in all but one game in 2006 and showed his true team character by playing where the team needed him. Whether it was catching passes out of the backfield, blocking for Booty, or blowing up defenders while in the fullback spot or on special teams, Bradford has shown that he is a player to be reckoned with over the next 3 years. He has been described as "a fucking beast" by his teammates and coaches. And I think I speak for everyone when I say that only death can keep this guy off the field this season. Read More......

Tourney Tim Strikes Gold Platinum

Romeo, primarily known for his music, Nickelodeon television show, and movies, states that basketball is his first love and that basketball is in his blood. With the drive and determination that has landed him success in the entertainment industry, I believe Romeo has the potential to be a great point guard.
Floyd now has verbal commitments from 3 point guards in the 2008 class. Where does this leave Brandon Jennings? Jennings decided earlier this month that he was going to consider his options and take official visits to UConn and Arizona. Do these recent commitments hurt Floyd's chances of retaining Jennings' commitment? Not necessarily. Jennings actually played alongside Derozan and Romeo for the P. 2007 NFL Mock Draft
Most people think that the Raiders are all but ready to select LSU QB JaMarcus Russell with the top overall pick. Though Russell will be an upgrade at the QB position, I highly doubt that he can help them win in the short term. Oakland has a playoff caliber defense, and are an efficient QB away from making a strong playoff push. I don't think they can afford to wait a few years for Russell to develop.
Before Peyton Manning won it last season, you have to go all the way back to Troy Aikman in 1989, as being the last QB selected #1 overall to lead his team to a Super Bowl victory. There have been 9 QB's taken 1st overall since then. Drew Bledsoe joins Manning as the only other to have even played in a Super Bowl. More on the Raiders projected pick below, but first let me tell you which two things are the only guarantees on draft day:
(a) The Bucs will take Calvin Johnson at #4 if he's available
(b) The Cardinals will take OT Joe Thomas at #5 if he is still available
With that being said, the keys to this year's draft are held by Oakland and Detroit. This post includes my projections for picks 1-16 of the 1st Round. Next week I'll have an updated, full 1st Round, and then I'll post a final mock covering rounds 1 and 2 on the eve of the draft. Hopefully the Raiders will have signed their pick by then, like Mario Williams and Houston last year.
1.
OAKLAND QB JaMarcus Russell, LSUThe Raiders are still debating whether they want Russell or stud WR Calvin Johnson. Unless they acquire a veteran QB, the pick is Russell.
2.
DETROIT OT Joe Thomas, WisconsinThe Lions need to protect the passer. They should get plenty of calls on draft day from teams wanting to move up.
3.
CLEVELAND RB Adrian Peterson, OklahomaThe Browns need a player who can help them win now. RB's tend to make the biggest impact as rookies.
4.
TAMPA BAY WR Calvin Johnson, Georgia TechThe Bucs may not be able to sit at #4 and wait for Johnson. They'll be holding their breath when the commissioner reads off Oakland's pick.
5.
ARIZONA DT Amobi Okoye, LouisvilleThe Cards will also be crossing their fingers hoping that Thomas is still on the board, if not they'll draft the 19 year old phenom.
6.
WASHINGTON DE Gaines Adams, ClemsonThe Redskins need to improve their pass rush, but they may still trade this pick to Chicago for LB Lance Briggs.
7.
MINNESOTA QB Brady Quinn, Notre DameThe Vikings took a QB in the 2nd round last year, but cannot pass on a player like Quinn after cutting Brad Johnson in the off-season.
8.
ATLANTA FS LaRon Landry, LSUThe Falcons will consider OT Levi Brown or DE Jamaal Anderson too, but they'll go with the player with the best value and pick Landry.
9.
MIAMI OT Levi Brown, Penn StateThe Dolphins can go in any direction with this pick. They'll start bye putting together a stable offensive line.
10.
HOUSTON OT Joe Staley, Central MichiganThe Texans need a LT, but don't have a 2nd round pick, which means that they may have to reach for Staley or trade down.
11.
SAN FRANCISCO DT Alan Branch, MichiganThe 49ers have holes at WR and along the defensive front, but they can find a WR in the 2nd round.
12.
BUFFALO LB Patrick Willis, Ole MissThe Bills need help at MLB, CB, and RB. Willis can start immediately and is my early pick for NFL Defensive Rookie of the Year.
13.
16.
GREEN BAY RB Marshawn Lynch, CaliforniaThe Packers need a RB, plain and simple. They also need a big WR and a playmaker at TE, but they can address those in later rounds. Read More......

According to this article, I have to say UFC because boxing just isn’t nailing the pay-per-view buys that it used to. I mean, De-La Hoya in 2006 got close to 900,000 buys, but no event in 2006 ever cracked 1 million buys. With the over-reliance on Oscar De La Hoya and the lack of a true primetime heavyweight, boxing is in trouble. WWE has sort of oversaturated the market with its many pay-per-view events. However, it does maintain the advantage of having a huge international audience. On the other hand, UFC has a small international audience and bulging domestic audience. But that is slowly starting to change, especially on April 21st when the UFC goes to

Mike Williams on the Block

This guy dominated games at SC, and I see no reason why he cant be a force in the NFL. Williams doesn't have any off the field issues (he's not makin it rain at strip clubs) so whichever team lands him will be getting a big, tough, and talented young receiver with excellent hands.

Adam Pacman Jones Suspended for the 2007 NFL Season.
Jones is alleged to have been involved in an altercation with an exotic stripper at the Minxx Gentlemen’s Club and Lounge over the NBA All-Star Game weekend. In a visual effect, Jones was onstage showering over 40 strippers with $81,000 in one-dollar bills. Jones threw the money in the air in an effort to “make it rain.” During Pacman’s “rain dance,” the strippers proceded to pick up the money as directed by the nightclub owners. Pacman was upset at the loss of his money and grabbed one of the strippers by the hair and slammed her face onto the stage floor. There was an ensuing scuffle between Pacman’s entourage and the strip club bouncers and shots were fired outside the club that left two guards, as well as a woman injured. One of the guards was left in critical condition and paralyzed from the waist down. Pacman claims that didn’t know the shooter yet the club owner claims Pacman did. No charges have been filed but Jones was suspended anyways.
Jones has a history of altercations with the law dating back to his college days. Among his credentials are assault, felony vandalism, disorderly conduct, public intoxication as well as a misdemeanor citation for allegedly spitting in the face of a female student from Tennessee State University.
While Pacman Jones has had his share of run-ins with the law, he has been able to maintain a high level of competiveness on the football field, playing defensive back for the Tennessee Titans. Pacman is also a kick return specialist with 3 punt return touchdowns last season. Besides being a solid player, his actions at Minxx that fateful night (pre-stripper-headbashing), are a testament to this guy’s ability to party. While many hip-hop songs speak of making it rain and what not, I don’t think anyone in the history of the world has ever “made it rain” as good as Adam Pacman Jones. The guy had $81,000 in dollar bills and showered 40 strippers… Pacman deserves props just for being able to throw that much cash into the air. I bet it was a thing of beauty.
Jones’ suspension proves the harsh policies of the NFL or No Fun League. In recent years, the league has cracked down on touchdown celebrations and the rights of players to express themselves. Gone are the days where players can “moon” fans, take a cheerleader’s poms poms and dance or any form of group celebrations. I’m surprised the league didn’t penalize the Giants for their “Ballin!” celebrations that have become a phenomenon. Add “making it rain” to the list of banned actions by the NFL. What is this world coming to? A man can no longer go to a stripclub and spend his hard-earned money any which way he wants. This is a direct violation of our rights as free citizens. Making it rain should not be frowned upon. Unfortunately, Goodell is taking the fun out of the league that wants to maintain it’s clean reputation. Players cannot be held accountable for the actions of their entourage or of random allegations. My condolences go out to the guard who was paralyzed, but also to Adam Pacman Jones. I’m hoping for an appeal and a suspension reduction. If people can’t make it rain at a club, then the terrorists have already won…

Awful-0 Enters 2007 NBA Draft
What this means is that fucla will not be as strong next year. The return of Awful-0 would have given them a better chance to return to the Final Four, but now they will have to compete without their leader. The downside is that we won't be able to heckle him next year after his second straight disappearing act in the semi-final game. We won't be able to give him one of these dejected images...

IMPACT Freshmen
- Jordan Campbell, LB/FB 5'11" 260lbs- Campbell spent his entire football career playing linebacker, however due to the great depth at the linebacker position, PC recruited Campbell as a fullback. Campbell spent his senior season on both sides of the ball attempting to learn his new position. The fullback position on the Trojan depth chart is as thin as fucla's football championship records. Stanely Havili is the only scholarship fullback on the roster. Havili has looked very impressive throughout the spring and had a great game at the Trojan Huddle. However, with the luck USC had at keeping fullbacks healthy last season it is important that PC add depth to the position. With the departure of Brandon Hancock and Ryan Powdrell and the continued rehab of big back Michael Coleman, Jordan Campbell will be a welcomed addition in the fall. I've seen Campbell at a few spring practices and he looks like a very solid football player. Once Jordan learns the offense look for him to get a lot of reps as Havili's backup.
- Everson Griffen, DE 6'4" 266lbs- Griffen is a monster. His size and athletic ability is unmatched by any recruit that PC has ever brought in. Griffen played defensive end and running back in high school. I have never seen a player of his size with the ability to overpower and outrun every player on the football field. With LoJack holding down one DE spot there's only one spot up for grabs. Currently, Kyle Moore has been working his tail off trying to prove to the coaching staff that he is deserving of that spot. He has had a good spring and looked very impressive on Saturday. Griffen will definitely push Moore for the starting job, making for one of the best position battles of the fall.
- Ronald Johnson, WR 6'0" 180lbs- The receivers have looked pretty good this spring, however at times they have looked inconsistent. Patrick Turner has been the only consistent performer throughout the spring. Ausberry, Hazelton, and Patterson are all very talented receivers and I am expecting great things from the three of them. However, with Jamere Holland out with another shoulder injury, I'm not sure we have a speedster that can go out deep and spread the field. RoJo will be a great addition to the receiving corp and should push the other receivers. I don't expect RoJo to crack the starting lineup but I do expect him to get some significant playing time next season.
* Other possible IMPACT freshmen: Kristopher O'Dowd and Joe Mcknight

There are three schools in the running for Jennings' commitment: USC, Arizona, and UConn. It will be up to Tim Floyd to win back the commitment of this prized recruit. Floyd will also be busy recruiting other top players in the 2008 class including the #1 overall prospect Greg Monroe and (my personal favorite) Demar Derozan from Compton High School. Luckily for Floyd he will have help recruiting Jennings. Trojan commit Malik Story has decided to transfer to Oak Hill Academy next year and will be playing alongside Jennings. Hershel Dennis: Beast
Dennis is a 2002 graduate of Long Beach Poly High School. He comes from the same graduating class that produced other Trojan stars such as Darnell Bing and Winston Justice. Dennis split carries his freshman year at USC with upperclassmen Justin Fargas and Sultan McCullough. He saw playing time in all 13 games that season and was the starter the year after for the Trojans. Dennis was the team’s 2nd leading rusher in 2003, playing in front of freshman tailbacks and current NFL players, Reggie Bush and Lendale White. Before we had Thunder and Lightening in the USC backfield, we had Hershel Dennis. This guy is a beast. Dennis rushed for 661 rushing yards in 2003. USC has had enough talent to use a running back by committee approach and Dennis paved the way for Bush and White to develop their game their freshman year. These guys had quite a mentor. Dennis has a great combination of speed and power. He can bounce to the outside to turn the corner or he can simply lower his shoulder and run through people. Dennis doesn’t just run over people, he trucks them.

Hershel Dennis has endured some setbacks in his career but he just keeps coming back. While other players would easily fold at injuries (see Dallas “Shoulder Sprain” Sartz), Dennis has recovered from two season ending knee injuries. He had an impressive showing at Saturday’s Trojan Huddle amassing two touchdowns, one on a 2 yard run and another on a 43 yard screen pass that he took to the house. I wasn’t there in person but I’ve heard that the longer touchdown by Dennis got all the fans in attendance wet.
USC desperately needed someone of Hershel’s caliber last season. There were far too many times when the running game looked stagnant and the running backs simply weren’t cutting it. This was a combination of our young backfield and Lane Kiffin’s “genius” playcalling. Thankfully that guy is no longer in the booth. I highly doubt USC would have looked so incompetent against UCLA’s defense in that defeat this last December had Dennis been in the lineup. Hershel would have run right through the Bruin’s defense and we would be admiring another BCS championship trophy at Heritage Hall.
Dennis has proven that he can still perform at a high level this Spring. Hopefully Dennis can continue his progress and return to form. We hope to see #34 back on the field breaking big runs and running wild over the Pac-10 defenses.

Trojan Huddle Recap

OFFENSE
The running game, with the four freshman running backs out nursing injuries, was led by the three seniors: Dennis (pictured above), last year's leading rusher Chauncey Washington, and Desmond Reed, who appears to be back to form, prior to the devastating knee injury he suffered in the tall grass of Notre Dame Stadium in October of 2005. Dennis looked simply amazing and reminded me why he started over Trojan greats Reggie Bush and LenDale in 2003. He showed the explosiveness we all remember on his first carry, making a defender miss in the backfield and taking it 22 yards to set up a first and goal situation for the offense. Dennis later capped off the drive with a powerful inside run from two yards out for the touchdown. On a later play, Hersh caught a middle screen from QB Mark Sanchez and raced around the left side of the defense and turned up the jets as he hit the sideline, outrunning Rey Maualuga and others for a crowd pleasing 43 yard TD catch. Desmond Reed showed quickness and a burst out of his cuts that we have not seen from him since that gruesome knee injury. However, he looked somewhat hesitant and tentative when the hole wasn't there. Reed displayed good hands and ran great routes out of the backfield and should be a good third down back for the Trojans this fall. Reed also may have staked his claim to assume punt returner duties after taking back a punt 74 yards for a TD. Though he didn't produce a big play like Dennis or Reed, Chauncey Washington was the best runner of the day. He broke into the secondary on several of his runs, showing toughness and aggressiveness on all his carries.

The passing game looked shaky at times, with the QB's throwing a combined 5 INTs, but they got some encouraging results from the young WR's. Booty looked sharp for the most part. He was intercepted by Keith Rivers on his first drive, but then reeled of 14 consecutive completions to finish 15 for 17 with 2 TDs and 2 INTs. The other INT came on a broken play where Booty's attempted screen pass was tipped by a defensive lineman to another defensive lineman for the pick. Sanchez, who finshed 11 for 23, had an inconsistent day, throwing 2 beautiful touchdown passes, but he also threw 2 INTs, and had several poorly thrown passes and a fumbled snap. The WR's shined, making big plays, albeit, against a short-handed secondary. Patrick Turner and Vidal Hazleton ran with the first team offense, and each recorded a touchdown.

Hazleton, high-stepped his way into the endzone on his TD catch, prompting Coach Carroll to tell the officials to flag him for unsportsmanlike conduct. Carroll was visibly perturbed by Hazleton's celebration, as USC was forced to kick the extra point 15 yards further than normal. David Ausberry seemed to struggle a bit versus bump and run coverage, but made several impressive grabs. He seems fit to play the Mike Williams/Dwayne Jarrett role in our offense and I'm pleased with his development.

As I mentioned above, Patterson seemed to have the best day, getting behind the defense twice on scoring passes from Sanchez and Michael McDonald, and returning a punt for a TD. But TE Fred Davis and FB Stanley Havili also had nice showings. Havili proved why the coaching staff values the fullback position so much. He was moved around alot too, motioning up to the line of scrimmage as a wing, and even being split out wide in an empty backfield set. He showed excellent hands, and ran well after the catch.
The offensive line played well too. The defense wasn't allowed to sack or even hit the QB, but rarely did the guys under center face pressure in the pocket. The line has to be credited too for the impressive showing from our running backs. The only injury scare from the scrimmage was Matt Spanos, who started the game at center. Scott Wolf reports that Spanos suffered a high ankle sprain and could be out for quite some time. The starting offensive line featured LT Sam Baker, LG Jeff Byers, Spanos, RG Chilo Rachal, and RT Drew Radovich. Jeff Byers moved over to center when Spanos went down and Tiny Malu came in at LG, so it'll be interesting to see how the line looks in the last week of spring practices as the team heads into the fall.
DEFENSE
There wasn't much to critique about the defense. They played well when you consider the injuries. The offense only produced one big play and two semi-big plays on the day, the big one was that fantastic catch and run by Dennis off the screen pass. The two not-so-big plays were Travon Patterson's 33 yard TD catch where he just ran past a helpless backup defender, and Vidal Hazleton's 34 yard TD reception following a missed tackle by FS Taylor Mays.
Mays was a non-factor on defense, missing more tackles than he should, including the one that led to the TD, but he did have the hit of the day. Early in the game, Booty rolled to his right and dumped it to FB Stanley Havili, who was then trucked by Mays for a 3 yard loss. CB's Cary Harris and Shareece right started the game and showed some decent coverage skills. They also were more than willing to come up to support the run, notching several open field tackles of Chauncey, Hersh, and Reed.
The linebackers played well, showing off their power and speed, but the standout was Thomas Williams. He proved to be more than capable of playing the strong side (SAM) linebacker position currently held by the injured Brian Cushing. If Cushing is slow to recover from his hamstring injury, or is unable to adapt to his new role after playing close to the line of scrimmage last season, Thomas should fill in nicely. Rivers and Maualuga played well against the run and the pass, and backup LB Kaluka Maiava had an interception.

The defensive line was solid. USC knows what it is getting out of Lawrence Jackson and Sedrick Ellis, but others made some nice plays as well. Alex Parson intercepted Booty's attempted screen pass, and Kyle Moore showed outstanding athletic ability by intercepting a Mark Sanchez pass intended for one of the backs on a wheel route. Moore displayed quickness and hustle and may have gone a long way to securing the starting DE position opposite of Lawrence Jackson.
All in all, it was a productive scrimmage, as both offenses moved the ball well under Booty and Sanchez. There was only one reported injury (M. Spanos), which is always important, and the players went out and competed. I can't wait when the team is full squad in the full with the arrival of the 2007 recruiting class, and the rehab of our injured player. Stay tuned for more news throughout the off-season.

Trojan Huddle Preview: Defense

That's quite a number of injuries, especially in the secondary, so the defense will be shorthanded. The following preview of the defensive units will be what I'm expecting to see in the scrimmage and how the positions project into the start of fall camp.
Defensive Line
After a year running a 3-4 defensive front, with Brian Cushing playing the extra linebacker at the "elephant" position, the Trojans are switching back to the more conventional 4-3 front. The lack of a pass rush last year may have been attributed to having Lawrence Jackson as our only pass rush specialist on the field. The sub-par numbers from Jackson didn't mean that he was playing terribly, he had a pretty solid season, but it did influence his decision to come back for his senior season. Junior Kyle Moore is expected to start at end opposite Jackson in the fall, but he needs to show the coaches that he can be a terror in the backfield. Not only does he need to gain confidence and become one of the leaders, he also must get a head start on highly touted fresman Everson Griffen, who will be staking his claim to the starting job in the fall. Junior Gerald Washington, a converted tight end, and senior Alex Morrow will provide depth.

The Trojans are strong at defensive tackle as they welcome back one of the nation's premier players, nose tackle Sedrick Ellis. It's not by mistake that the Trojan defense struggled a bit last year in the few games that Ellis missed due to injury. He will anchor the line along with junior Fili Moala, who should start next to Ellis. Senior Chris Barret, sophomore Alex Parsons, and freshman Derek Simmons will work to back up Fili, while sophomore Averell Spicer and junior Lawrence Miles will spot Ellis at NT. I'm looking for Fili Moala to emerge out of the group as someone who can exploit the constant double teams that Ellis and Jackson will be receiving this season.

Linebackers
The biggest change that was brought by switching back to the 4-3 front will be that of Brian Cushing, as he will now move off the line of scrimmage to the strong side linebacker position (SAM). He will now have more room to roam and make plays instead of battling offensive linemen down in the trenches like he did last season. It will be an adjustment for Cushing, but hasn't been able to practice since injuring his hamstring early in the spring. Senior Keith Rivers enters his 3rd year starting on the weak side, and the hard-hitting junior Rey Maualuga takes over full-time in the middle after sharing time with senior captain Oscar Lua last year. Rey now becomes the unquestioned leader in the defensive huddle, and all players will respect him. Coaches everywhere are aware that they must know where #58 is at all times, including USC LB's Coach Ken Norton, Jr. Senior Thomas Williams, an electrifying hitter, is the top backup. He is smart and versatile, and can play all 3 LB positions equally well. Junior Kaluka Maiava and sophomore Luthur Brown will backup Rivers and Maualuga, respectively. This is one of the deepest and most talented LB corps in the country and should serve as the backbone of this defense. The only question mark will be how quickly Cushing adapts to his new role, because we know Rey and Keith just flat out make plays.

Defensive Backs
To say that the defensive backs have been banged up this spring would be an understatement. Projected starters at CB Terrell Thomas and Cary Harris, as well as one of their top backups Kevin Thomas have been out. Safeties Kevin Ellison and Josh Pinkard have also missed all of them spring as they rehab and get ready for the upcoming season. The only healthy starter in the secondary this spring has been FS Taylor Mays, who took over for Pinkard last season when he injured his knee in the opener at Arkansas. The one positive thing is that the guys like CB Shareece Wright, who are further down on the depth chart, have gotten quality reps, which has bolstered the overall talent and depth in the secondary. Mozique McCurtis is another tough and savvy player, much like LB Thomas Williams, who is versatile and can play many roles in the secondary. The biggest myth will be the availability of Josh Pinkard. Carroll often referred to him as the best and most valuable player on defense going into last season. Pinkard, who was inserted at CB when the defense was struggling in 2005, and played really well, is probably the smartest and most instinctive player on the team. But with the emergence of Mays at FS, and the improved play at CB, where will he fit in this season. Of course he must first get healthy.

Hope you liked the offensive and defensive preview of Saturday's spring game. I'll provide a complete post game wrap up on Sunday with my thoughts, as well as a few quotes and reactions from players and coaches.

Trojan Huddle Preview: Offense
The Running Game
The offense needs a running back that will separate himself from the rest of the pack. With C.J. Gable, Allen Bradford, Emmanuel Moody, and Stafon Johnson banged up, it looks like Chauncey Washington has the inside track at cracking the top of the depth chart heading into fall camp. Don't forget about Hershel Dennis, who is waiting on the NCAA to grant him a 6th year of eligibility. Dennis is confident that he will gain a 6th year, so long as he graduates this May and completes his degree in sociology. We seem to be set at FB with Stanley Havili, who's looked great all spring, but he is also battling the injury bug so we'll see if he's able to go tomorrow. Michael Coleman is likely to move to fullback, increasing the depth behind Havili. The running backs need a big day because they know that 3 talented freshmen will be arriving in the fall.

The Passing Game
John David Booty needs to find a rhythm with his new WR's as they continue to break in to the demands of Division I football. Only Fred Davis and Patrick Turner have any real game experience catching balls from Booty, and they are certain to be his go to guys this season. The coaching staff needs someone to step up and take the #2 and #3 WR spots. Vidal Hazleton, David Ausberry (pictured below), Travon Patterson, and Jamere Holland have all been battling it out this spring as Turner's complimentary WR. Carroll has already pulled Hazleton aside to offer him a little pep talk urging him to make the most of his opportunity. I'm looking forward to a big day from this guy though...

Quarterback
Booty is back at QB, as he'll be leading the offense with a year of playing experience now under his belt. He will be entering his 5th season at 'SC and should know the playbook inside and out, so I'm not worried about him at all. However, this will be a big day for back up QB Mark Sanchez. Scott Wolf reported that Mitch Mustain will be attending tomorrow's scrimmage, so it'll be a big opportunity to showcase his skill and supplant himself as the heir apparent to Booty.
Offensive Line
The O-Line's biggest challenge heading into next season will be to find a center to replace last year's unquestioned team leader, Ryan Kalil. This spring the reps at center have been taken by the likes of Nick Howell, Matt Spanos, and even Jeff Byers (an all-american at Center in high school). The staff is trying to find a cohesive group and have not ruled out more changes. Last year's starting guard, Drew Radovich is now taking snaps at Right Tackle, with Byers filling in at Drew's Left Guard spot. Don't forget highly touted incoming freshman lineman Kristofer O'Dowd will join the squad this fall. He is versatile enough to play either center or guard. One thing that is certain is that LT Sam Baker will anchor the line and protect Booty's blind side. He is without a doubt the best linemen on the team and one of the best in the nation. Chilo Rachal is the returning starter at RG, and appears to have firm hold on that spot, and Radovich is currently the leader at RT, but may also stay at his old LG position. If Byers returns to his old form he will start at either LG or C, leaving Spanos, Howell, and O'Dowd competing for the final spot...

Should be an interesting game, hopefully our guys will showcase their skills and battle for those open spots. The preview of the defense will be up shortly.

Why smoking crack and writing don't mix
1) UCLA being ranked in the Preseason Football Top-10
2) UCLA being predicted to beat USC. At the Coliseum. In December. By 20. To Win the Pac-10.
Your everyday senior writer Dennis Dodd, and I stress senior, because typically seniors have proven themselves legitimate and usually write provocative work. This jackass basically breathes shit gas and then mentions how the "UCLA minister of Propaganda" breathes even more shit gas. I urge you to read with caution. And I am pretty sure Pete Carroll has a copy of UCLA's spring guide and will keep it in mind when UCLA comes into the Lion's Den on December 1st. Read More......

8. USC The national spotlight will follow super-recruit O.J. Mayo to Troy, where the Trojans are already loaded. He'll join Daniel Hackett and Gabe Pruitt in a three-headed backcourt, and as long as the chemistry clicks -- and it doesn't become the O.J.-only show -- USC will be a force.

Why Soccer Will Never Catch On in the U.S.
Some of you might have heard of another high profile player to sign a contract to play for an MLS team recently. David Beckham will play with the Los Angeles Galaxy in July after his contract with Real Madrid expires this summer. Beckham is more well-known than Blanco but both are good players that should boost their teams. Beckham's signing sparked national media attention for about a good 2 days. It was all over ESPN and it was even discussed on the ESPN programs Around the Horn and PTI. Blanco's signing received much more subdued media coverage for obvious reasons. The news was broken during the same time as the start of the MLB season as well as Florida's crowning as repeat NCAA Basketball Champions. Also, most of the U.S. was probably asking themselves, "Who or what the fuck is Cuahtemoc Blanco?"
Both of these signings would have been the top stories of the week in any other country. I'm not just talking about sports news either. I mean front page headlines type of stuff. There would have been front page headlines in national newspapers, dozens of related articles scattered around the news as well as public excitement for these signings. Maybe Blanco's signing wouldn't be as celebrated, but Beckham's signing would have given the entire nation a giant chubby.
This is the state of soccer here in the U.S. No one really gives a rat's ass about what happens in soccer. For one thing, a lot of people don't follow soccer and the media considers soccer an afterthought, just ask Jim Rome, a professed "hater" of soccer. While millions of kids play youth soccer and will continue their love of the game, soccer doesn't become a headline unless it's a World Cup year. The World Cup is about the only time soccer is shown or given extensive coverage on the major networks. Sure, ESPN2 shows the Champions League but you usually have to subscribe to a premium cable or satellite package to get full soccer coverage from around the world.
The reasons why soccer will never catch on in mainstream America is because we focus on every other sport. Football, basketball and baseball are the heavyweights. Those sports have the best American athletes. They offer the most lucrative marketing and profit shares here in the U.S. and they have become a part of our very lives (just ask any contributer of this blog). Soccer will remain an afterthought in the U.S. until the media gives it the same attention. Media coverage, coupled with a massive advertising and player signings will make soccer a little more bearable for the average American fan. The U.S. will remain a stranger to the "beautiful game" until the best athletes are picking up the sport and Major League Soccer stops making their stadiums sound like a giant shopping center... i.e. Dick's Sporting Goods Park, Home Depot Center and my favorite, Pizza Hut Park. While other countries have rich soccer stadium tradition such as the Estadio Azteca in Mexico, the Maracana in Brazil or Old Trafford or Stamford Bridge in England, we have Pizza Hut Park.... holy fuck.
I think David Beckham and Cuahtemoc Blanco's signings are a step forward in making the MLS into less of a joke. I doubt they will be able to make soccer into the phenomenon it is in other countries though. The league needs more than two soccer figures to give it a pulse. A league expansion, more lucrative contracts and the need for better American soccer players will start the ball rolling on making the MLS into a competitive soccer league and the legitimacy of U.S. soccer. Just imagine how sick the U.S. National Team would be if athletes such as Reggie Bush, Ed Reed, LeBron James and Maurice Green played soccer... and they were coached by Bill Parcells... with Pete Carroll as assistant.... Championship Game Preview
The game might be good if Greg Oden can play more than 20 minutes in the game. This guy picks up fouls faster than Aaron Awful-0 did in Saturday's Final Four game. I don't like Oden. I just can't root for a 30 year old man playing against a bunch of kids. It's just not fair. This guy looks older than LeBron.
I really don't know who to root for. Probably the only things I like about these schools are their mascots. Albert Gator and Brutus Buckeye are some of the funniest looking mascots out there. I guess the only thing I'm hoping for are injuries to the teams' key players. Instead of rooting for Florida or Ohio St., I'll root for torn ACL's. Enjoy the game.
